Department of Better Technology: Full-Stack Engineer

The Department of Better Technology was founded to help governments deliver great software to the people they serve.

We build a product called Screendoor, which helps customers evaluate submissions to their online forms.Everyone from ProPublica and the Ford Foundation to USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau manages their innovation challenges, grant submissions, bid management, speaker selection, and hiring searches with Screendoor. We’re looking for a second engineer to join our team.

Our office is in Oakland, and we have other colleagues in Los Angeles and Boston. Responsibilities- Build, test, and refine product features.- Diagnose, document and debug production issues at every level of the stack.- Participate in code reviews.- Support our implementations with enterprise customers.What we'll give you- Opportunities to work on transformational change within government.- A flexible schedule.- A minimum vacation time of two weeks, not including holidays and sick days.- A paid membership to your co-working space of choice (if desired).- An annual professional development budget of $1,000 to help you grow in your career.- $100K–$125K salary, with equity (negotiable).You may be a good fit for this role if…- You appreciate and are excited to contribute to a humane, mutually respectful work environment.- You take deep pride in your work, but can make peace with shipping code that’s “good enough.”- You have excellent communication skills, in writing and in person.- You’re deeply familiar with the Rails stack, or something similar to it.- You’re okay with wearing many hats on a small team.- You understand the value that good design brings to a product.- You’re comfortable with (or excited about) taking ownership of major tech decisions at a hybrid SaaS / enterprise software company.- You pride yourself on clean, well-structured, and documented code.- You’re comfortable communicating complex engineering concepts to people of varying technical literacy.- You are independent and thrive in a startup and low-touch management environment.In addition, we will prefer candidates who have expertise in one or more of the following:- Front-end Web performance- Client-side JS frameworks (like Backbone, or something similar)- Implementing JS-heavy responsive web applications for small and large screens alike- Organizing, maintaining, and enforcing style conventions for CSS- Adhering to Web accessibility standards (like WCAG 2.0 Level AA or Section 508But, if your background is mostly with Rails or a similar stack, don't worry.
